Gustav Klimt Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), reproduced here, is an example of the Viennese "Youth School" style. The subject's face emerges from the background like a dream, and the portrait is hauntingly beautiful. The painting was seized by the Nazis in the 1940s, recovered and is now on display in New York.
